Ohio River Fishing Report from the Ohio DNR.
    May 25, 2011
Pike Island Dam (Belmont County) – Water clarity is clearing up as the river returns to a more normal level. Sauger fishing has been good, and anglers have been fishing the pier by vertical jigging with ¼ oz. or smaller jigging spoons. Other methods for sauger fishing on the river include cast and a slow retrieve off the bottom of jigs with pearl or chartreuse twister tails tipped with a minnow. Catfishing has been picking up in the evenings and early mornings, try night crawlers or chicken livers. Anglers fishing for catfish have also reeled in the occasional hybrid striped bass. Smallmouth bass fishing has been fair, try casting spinner baits, crankbaits, tube baits or top water “walk-the-dog” style baits off of stony points.

Ohio River (Jefferson County) – There are several anglers catching smallmouth below the New Cumberland lock. The numbers being caught are in the double digits and the sizes range from 12-inch fish up to 18 inches. Anglers are using jigheads with twister tails or grubs. White and chartreuse colors were the hot picks this past weekend. This tackle is ideal because it is effective and not expensive. Tackle loss at this location can be high.

Riverbend to downtown area (Hamilton County) – Water levels are still high but anglers report channel cats off gravel humps in about 20 feet of water near channel drop-offs. Fish depths from 15 to 30 feet and try cut skipjack and shad.
Eagle Creek Reservoir: A very good bite for crappie. Small jigs tipped with plastic or minnows are taking fish in 3 to 15 feet deep water.

Prairie Creek reservoir: Anglers report a good bite for walleye.

Greene-Sullivan State Forest Lakes: Fishing has been good for a mixed bag of fish. Bluegill, crappie and bass are being taken. Fish are fanning beds. Some nice catches of bluegill are being taken.

White River: High and muddy. All fishing is poor due to high water conditions. A few channel catfish being taken on shad guts.

Cagles Mill Lake (Lieber SRA) FLOODING UPDATE 5/26: Due to recent heavy rains, all boat ramps at Lieber SRA (Cagles Mill) are currently closed. Campers are still able to access the property from SR231 by taking i-70 to exit 37 and taking SR243 to the property. At Cataract Falls SRA, the road to the Lower Falls is also closed. Please contact Lieber for more specific information. Thank you.

Patoka Lake FLOODING NOTE 5/26: All boat ramps and campgrounds are now OPEN. The ADA fishing pier at Osborne Ramp, all trails, and the beach are still CLOSED, along with one restroom and shelter that are located in the beach picnic area. The lake itself is open, however, boaters should exercise caution because of debris. Please check back to this web page for updates, or contact the property directly for more specific questions. Thank you for your patience. Anglers are catching some walleye, a few crappie and bass. Bluegill are beginning to move off the nest. Bugs are bad, so use plenty og bug repellent while outside.

Monroe Lake FLOODING UPDATE 5/26/2011: THE FOLLOWING RAMPS ARE NOW OPEN: Allens Creek SRA, Crooked Creek SRA, the high water ramp at Cutright SRA, Fairfax SRA, Hardin Ridge SRA, Moores Creek SRA, Paynetown SRA, and Salt Creek SRA. Paynetown SRA and Fairfax SRA will have limited recreational facilities open. Due to heavy flooding, the Pine Grove SRA boat ramp area remains CLOSED. In addition, ALL CAMPING AND SHELTER FACILITIES ARE STILL CLOSED AT PAYNETOWN SRA THRU (and including) JUNE 1ST, POSSIBLY LONGER. Check this web page periodically for further updates. Anyone with reservations between now and June 1, 2011, will be contacted by the reservation call center and full refunds will be issued. Thank you for your patience.

Salamonie Lake FLOODING INFORMATION 5/26/2011: Due to flooding, the beach is currently CLOSED, and will remain closed until further notice. Richard Daulton of Otterbein shows a hybrid striped bass, also called a wiper, that he caught on May 12 on the Tippecanoe River just below the Oakdale Dam. The fish is a hybrid between a white bass and a striped bass. It weighed 20 pounds, 8 ounces and was 32.5 inches long. (Photo provided)
