Have driven by this place 1000 times without ever eating there. My wife is a huge fan of Mexican food but me, not so much. But since this was our Valentines dinner I wanted her to be happy and eat what she wanted.

To start with it was incredibly packed.
They told us it would be a 20 minute wait (which is the max I'll wait) and they seated us in about 15.

The first thing I noticed was the decor.
I loved it, found it very original. Kind of an old decaying Mexican Cantina.

We started with an appetizer, some kind of really thick warm cheese that you put inside a warm flour tortilla.
I found it enjoyable. The wife was going to town on the all you can chips and salsa.

She ordered some kind of combo platter and I a Mexican style steak.

The steak was excellent. Cooked just how I ordered and full of flavor. The rice that came with it was good but I don't do refried beans so they went to waste.

The wife was more than satisfied with her combo platter though I could not tell you what all was on it.

The service was excellent and I was willing to be a little lenient seeing as how busy they were.

The bill was a nice surprise as well.

We would definitely go back.....

I have been to Pepe's several times, but that was several years ago. I'm glad to hear the food is still good! I'll have to remember that the next time we are in Lafayette.

When my oldest son was almost four, he saw the sign on the way into the mall and yelled---"PEEPEE's!! Gross!! Who would eat there????" It was hilarious!!!

We always seem to get steak and chicken fajitas and chili con queso, LOVE the con queso :) ....the margaritas are pretty worthless though.....If I'm in the mood for a drink I'll usually go with a Blue Moon.

we will have to give it a try, as we too have been by it a 1000 times. we did try the other new mexican restaurant a couple of weeks ago up there. it is in the old Lone Star steak house on 52. the food was so, so, fair priced, (i'd say $7.00-$9.00 average/plate) but the Decore inside was as cheesy as cheesy could be.

We've ate at Pepe's ever since they opened in Lafayette, and before they moved to their present location. They used to have their bottles of sauce on the tables, but they don't anymore. Next time you're there I suggest you ask them for some packets of their hot sauce and try it!

Also, don't know if they still have them, but if you're real adventurous ask them for some of their carrot slices and peppers! (As I've grown older I can't handle that hot!!!)

I used to get them and take them to employees on the job sight (construction) and offer them to the guys who were always bragging how tough they were and bet them they couldn't eat all of the carrots! Nothing like seeing tough guys with tears in their eyes!:rofl

Ate at Pepes tonight with my son. We both got enchilladas. Worst meal I've had out in I don't know how long. I'll never go there again. He felt the same way I did.

We LOVE Pepe's in Lafayette!! It's our favorite place to eat. We don't care for the one in Frankfort, the food isn't as good and the service SUCKS!!! We love the salsa too!!

If I ever want tasteless salsa, PePe's is where I will head to.

Did you get the regular salsa or the hot? I like mixing the two together. I also agree the Lafayette Pepe's is better than the one in Frankfort. The last time I was in Frankfort's it appeared that they were training a lot of new wait staff.
